When one asks actress Natalie Portman what she's currently listening to, immediately the memory flashes back to the classic scene in “Garden State.” If you've seen the movie, you know the one: Her character, Sam, is in a doctor's office waiting room when she starts up a conversation with Andrew, played by Zach Braff. Her character is raving about the Shins, and soon we're inside her head enjoying the band too.

Portman, who's generating Oscar buzz for her work as a ballerina in Darren Aronofsky's “Black Swan,” says that she's been looking back in music more than she is keeping up with trends. Currently in heavy rotation, she says, is “nothing new, although of new stuff, I like Antony, and Sufjan Stevens and Deerhunter. I also listen to a lot of hip-hop — but more older stuff, like Tribe and Jurassic 5 and the Roots.

They’re a 6-man unit with more than 15-years of DJ and production work under their belts. They’ve won numerous titles of prestige, including the 2000 ITF Western Hemisphere Team Championships and were also the 2001 DMC Regional Champions. They’ve been innovators to boot, utilizing 12-turntables for a team routine back in 1999 that transcended gimmicks—a feat that turntablism hadn’t witnessed up until that point. And as of late, you’ve heard their original music featured in McDonald’s ad spots, The Simpson’s video game, MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew, and recent Pepsi commercials. On a local level, they successfully run party promotions, including Ta-Dow (Oakland), Music Machine (SF and San Jose), and Strut (SF). These parties are booming nights in their respective cities, hosting local talent, DJs, and guest performers from across the country. AIFF are in long terms Afro Influenced Funk Federation. The Dutch musicians around DJ and producer Phil Martin and musician Ton van der Kolk play an enormous groove establishing their own version of afro-funk. Influenced by classic afro funk like Fela Kuti, they try to bring afro-funk to a new dimension. Like other actual afro funk projects, they integrate all their musical influences in their tracks. The favourite styles they melt to their unique sound range from deep-funk, soul and jazz to reggae and afro music. They just love all kinds of roots music.
AIFF give proof to the fact that young musicians can make music in an afrobeat way. The percussions are breathing in a wide space, the guitar simply forces you to dance and the horns change from mellow to rude style. You can feel the “endless groove“ rising, which is when a base rhythm of drums, muted guitar and bass are repeated like the groove will never end. AIFF played most instruments on their own, for the vocals and horns they just asked friends they like to work with like Marco Hijl on saxophone and flute.

The Jamaican reggae singer Sugar Minott, who has died unexpectedly aged 54, had a prolific solo career from the 1970s onwards. He scored his biggest hit with Good Thing Going, a cover version of a recording by Michael Jackson. Minott's single reached No 4 in the UK in 1981 and prompted a well-received follow-up album of the same name. Minott worked with many of Jamaica's leading producers, including Coxsone Dodd, Mikey Dread and Sly & Robbie, and also nurtured younger artists through his Black Roots label and his company Youthman Promotion.

The Budos Band are an "Instrumental Staten-Island Afro-Soul" outfit recording on the Daptone Records label. The band has ten members (up to thirteen members at times) who play instrumental music that is self-described as "Afro-Soul," a term and sound which - in a 2007 interview - baritone saxophone player Jared Tankel elucidates as, being drawn from Ethiopian music the band had been listening to that had a soul undercurrent to it, which the band then "sprinkled a little bit of sweet 60's stuff on top" of.
Jazz, deep funk, Afro-beat, and soul influences can be heard in the Budos Band recordings, all of which were recorded at Daptone Records at the label's own studio, Daptone's House of Soul, in Bushwick, Brooklyn.

One of the dopest bands out there and will be in Chicago july 12th at millenium park!!!!! DON'T SLEEP

Gil Scott-Heron (born April 1, 1949) is an American poet, musician, and author known primarily for his late 1960s and early 1970s work as a spoken word soul performer and his collaborative work with musician Brian Jackson. His collaborative efforts with Jackson featured a musical fusion of jazz, blues and soul music, as well as lyrical content concerning social and political issues of the time, delivered in both rapping and melismatic vocal styles by Scott-Heron. The music of these albums, most notably Pieces of a Man and Winter in America in the early 1970s, influenced and helped engender later African-American music genres such as hip hop and neo soul. Scott-Heron’s recording work is often associated with black militant activism and has received much critical acclaim for one of his most well-known compositions “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised”. On his influence, Allmusic wrote “Scott-Heron’s unique proto-rap style influenced a generation of hip-hop artists”.

The Hot 8 Brass Band is a New Orleans based brass band that blends hip-hop, jazz and funk styles with traditional New Orleans brass sounds. It was formed by Bennie Pete, Jerome Jones, and Harry Cook in 1995, the merging of two earlier bands, the Looney Tunes Brass Band and the High Steppers Brass Band. HERE is sexual healing people and when I play Hot 8 reminds me off Treme the new show in HBO and shhh is fire, I recommend.

BG just by its name you will think ahh they must be from Brazil and actually BG is a band from New York known for their blends and fushion style as diverse as tango,chanson,house,reggae and loungy downtempo. None of the members are from Brazil what so ever which, I fine pretty weird but the name is trendy and very catchy. The only female is the lead singe and she goes by the name of Sabina Sciubba and has a killer voice. BG kind of reminds me of Portishead, but with there own twist.

Breakestra is a ten-piece funk "orchestra" from Los Angeles, California, formed by Miles Tackett in 1996. Breakestra to me is one of the dopest slept on live acts around. Saw them live in NO about eight years ago and ever since, I have been a fan.
The Breaks were the original cats of the root down in LA (RIP). The Breakestra perform regularly to capacity crowds along side hip hop luminaries such as Jurassic 5, Dilated Peoples, Black Eyed Peas, Freestyle Fellowship, Company Flow, Cut Chemist, Nu-Mark and DJ Shadow. for years ruedione was an active graffiti writer himself and the documentation of his works led him to photography. he says that passion, obsession and even addiction connects him to the medium these days and by now he exclusively uses the camera for his works. for almost a decade, he has been documenting the writers` scene and has thus remained part of it as its visual chronicler. it makes the viewer feel what graffiti is about on the emotional side.

the images show all the tension, the adrenalin and the kicks that graffiti writers experience.

a visual expedition into a world that usually is restricted to the members of a very small scene. his photos show the active graffiti scene worldwide, may it be new york city, sao paulo or hamburg. in his series, documentary photography that creates contemporary documents meets abstract snapshots that are distinguished by their independent aesthetics. these images give the viewer an insight into an usually hidden scene.

his intention is to visualize and preserve the moments that kept him writing his name on a lot of surfaces for years, in a way that shows rather the emotions than the places and persons.

My words to this book is a must have on your coffee table! I lived graff for twelve years of my life and still till this day will bust a tag or paint a fright with fellow crew members. I am a total adrenalin junky and looking at these pics and reading a bit of the book this totally reminds me of the life style I lived. Going out w/ crew members 3 to 4 the most staying up and watching yards till the late hours waiting up to four hours just to paint a fresh panal. Once you done get your flick and attempt to watch that bad boy run there is no other feeling people. My best times were when I was doing roof tops at 3am and seeing the train pass everytime sure do miss them days!!!!!

DJ Finds Out Charles Manson Is His Dad!!!!!!!!!

A Los Angeles man who works as a DJ and grew up as an adopted child in the Midwest recently revealed that his father is convicted killer Charles Manson, who, along with his "Manson Family" followers terrorized L.A. 40 years ago.

Matthew Roberts, 41, told the U.K.'s Sun newspaper that he tracked down his mother who told him she was a Manson follower in 1967 when the killer raped her. He was born the next year. Roberts has since exchanged letters with his father, who is 75 and still in state prison. He says dear old dad signs off his correspondence with a swastika.

The DJ says he first began his journey to track down his real parents 12 years ago. His adoptive parents discouraged it, but he wanted to know more. Roberts says he has a '60s spirit, unlike the conservative values of his Midwestern family.

When he tracked down his biological mother and she finally fessed up about his father's identity, Roberts says she told him, "You look just like him."

"If I get worked up, my eyes get really big and that's really freaked some people out before," Roberts says. "I've tried to tone that down quite a bit. I don't like having that effect on people."

He says he worships Ghandi and that "I don't even kill bugs."

My take on this is WTF, if I found out that my father was Manson and that I looked like him I will be freaking the fuck out. Luckly he didn't since he is the opposite of his dad more power to him, but 60% off time most people that are serial killers and that do have children have some type of symptoms to those of there father or mother!!!!
