Seun Kuti And Fela's Egypt 80

Seun Kuti is unmistakably his father's son. Progeny of Fela Kuti, the primary bandleader of Afrobeat - the politically charged and mesmerisingly groovy sound of 1970s Nigeria - Seun, like older brother Femi, keeps their father's flame alive. As with Fela's work, the music on new album Many Things is unafraid to engage with specifics - Mosquito Song is about governmental failure to provide information about malaria prevention - and, what's more, it does so with the aid of Fela's band, Egypt 80. For all Seun's claims of being hip-hop influenced, he's not changed much on the Afrobeat template, but realistically, what he's protesting about hasn't changed much either.

The Rat Pack

Hmm chilling at work, bored as hell but who cares. I'm shocked that I hacked in my company's computer, but I did and decided to go ahead and publish this post. Last night was a good night to kick it w/ the homies, got together w/ the Rat Pack and headed to see my roomate Dj Intel do his thang at this new joint Crocodile Lounge(Cinnabar Lounge) in lovely Wicker Park. For those young bucks out there Cinnabar was a classic joint that had a lot of soul and love for the people and especially the music. Crocodile Lounge isn't Cinnabar by any means, but with some work it has the potential to be the kind of place where you can step in and go back to the old days.

32nd&Urban...

Friends,
In the words of Boyz II Men, "it's so hard to say goodbye".
We opened in December 2006. Not really knowing how to make it all work. We exposed ourselves to people, places and everything else in our attempt to create a culture and environment that was truly unique. Embracing the south side community of Bridgeport, it embraced us right back. Making mistakes along the way and celebrating many successes, the past two years has been a professional and personal journey.
The 32nd&urban Team, must now announce, with a heavy heart, the closure of the 3201 South Halsted Street location. Proudly, some really great shows opened with Urban's signature black tin ceiling and mosaic tile floors accompanied by the curatorial flavor of Peter Kepha, along with a fine selection of Chicago's best deejays, a collage of wonderful sponsorships, helpful friends (you know who you all are!), interns, and family, and last but definitely not least, the always amazing collection of Artists- local and beyond Chicago borders. We thank you ALL for believing in us!
So why? There is a new police station opening across the street from the gallery. With this said, our new neighbors are making it difficult for us to continue what we do. That's it.
This doesn't mean 32nd&urban is dead. We are very much alive. Peter Kepha and Lauren Pacheco will be keeping Urban alive. They have been scouting alternative locations and playing around with non-traditional gallery exhibition opportunities among other special projects like publications and arts programming.
As we say goodbye to our home, we invite you to celebrate and help us keep up the spirit of 32nd&urban: gallery/space through this special fundraiser event.
LIQUIDS, GOOD MUSIC, DANCING AND FRIENDS!
You might even get a chance to leave your own mark on the walls that have held some of Chicago's most favorite art makers!
Peep the flyer invite below and we hope to see you all very, very, very soon!
Respectfully,
32nd&urban

Flying Lotus < Live On Radio One > Essential Mix

http://www.divshare.com/download/5984937-786
Before releasing 1983 -- his debut album as Flying Lotus, on Plug Research in 2006 --the California-based beat maker Steven Ellison upped his profile filling in the segues on Adult Swim. It's the type of instrumental hip-hop that's led to comparisons to the work of Madlib, Prefuse, and J Dilla -- and to a deal with the pioneering Warp label. Warp released the six-song Reset EP in 2007 and will release his full-length debut, Los Angeles, on June 10. Here, Ellison (a great nephew of John and Alice Coltrane) talks about his pseudonym, the inspiration for his music, the Holy Grail of sneakers, and Obama.
